Two new wildfires confirmed in Northeast Region

Two new wildfires are confirmed in the Northeast Region, according to a news release from Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services.

Wawa 2 was confirmed the Friday afternoon, located three km west of Highway 17, just south of Kwinkwaga Ground Moraine Uplands. The 0.8-hectare fire is not under control. North Bay 2 was confirmed Friday afternoon, located six km north of Cooks Mills. The three-hectare fire is not under control.

There is a high hazard for the majority of the Northeast Region and an extreme hazard for Cochrane and Smooth Rock Falls areas.

Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services remind the public to use caution when performing any outdoor burning. In order to dispose of yard waste and woody debris, we encourage you to use methods such as composting or using your local landfill. If you must burn, follow Ontario’s Outdoor Burning Regulations.

Fires are to be ignited no sooner than two hours before sunset and extinguished no later than two hours after sunrise. Always have tools/water adequate to contain the fire at the site. Know the rules for safe outdoor burning. Consult the full set of Outdoor Burning Regulations
