Two people killed in three-vehicle crash on Highway 144

The highway was closed for about 12 hours for the investigation

OPP say two people died in a crash on Highway 144 in Sudbury yesterday afternoon near Marina Road

Preliminary investigation indicated that an SUV was travelling northbound on Highway 144 and collided with a northbound pickup truck while passing it. The SUV then collided with a southbound transport.

The SUV became engulfed in flames, which were later extinguished by Greater Sudbury Fire Service.

Both the driver and passenger of the SUV were pronounced dead at the scene while the driver of the transport and pickup truck did not receive any injuries.

The highway was closed in both directions for approximately 12 hours for the investigation.

Police say names of the deceased driver and passenger are not being released until the next of kin are notified.

Nipissing West OPP investigated the collision involving the pickup truck, sports utility vehicle and a commercial motor vehicle.

The OPP's Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI) and the Office of the Chief Coroner- Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OCC-FPS) are assisting with this investigation.
