Two charged in Kirkland Lake drug bust

On May 23, 2019, officers from the Ontario Provincial Police North East Region Community Street Crime Unit, the North East Region OPP Emergency Response Team and members of the Kirkland Lake Detachment of the OPP, executed a search warrant on Government Road West in the Town of Kirkland Lake, Ont.  

As a result of the search warrant, police seized drugs suspected to be cocaine and methamphetamine and a quantity of Canadian currency. The estimated total street value of the seizure is $18,000.   

As a result of the police investigation, the OPP have charged two people.  

Matthew Sturgeon, age 24, of Kirkland Lake, Ont., is charged with the following:  

  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA), 
  • Possession of a schedule I substance - methamphetamine, contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA, and
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC).

Harley Haran, age 23, of Kirkland Lake, Ont., is charged with the following:  

  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA), 
  • Possession of a schedule I substance - methamphetamine, contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA, and
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC).

Both accused are scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kirkland Lake, on Aug. 8, 2019.
