After years of discussion, the YMCA of Timmins has joined with the YMCA of Northeastern Ontario.

The amalgamation creates one organization for Timmins, North Bay and Sudbury.

The move has been discussed for five years, according to the news release announcing the change. For the past seven months, the YMCAs have been under one CEO. The amalgamation has also been approved by the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee and Service Canada

“Our organizations are stronger together with unlimited potential. More choice, more partnerships, more connections, more efficiency, for a stronger organization and a healthier region," said Helen Francis, president and CEO, in the news release.

Both of the boards have collaborated well and are excited about the associations joining together, according to Tom Welton, board of directors chair.

“This means shared resources, and collaboration between both locations, in order to better serve members. By acting as one YMCA, it means that the YMCA can create governance and organizational efficiency by ending unnecessary duplication. They can invest and focus on the people, functions and systems that are needed so that the YMCA is better able to be sustainable for generations to come," he said.

The local services will continue to be tailored to its members, reads the news release. Any money that is donated will stay in each community.
