Timmins pulls off the best Northeastern Ontario ranking in a report that lists the country’s top places to start and grow a business.

The report, released this month by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, scores cities based on 14 economic indicators, including tax rates, growth rates for business, hiring outlooks, and local government sensitivity to local businesses.

Overall, the news isn’t great for Northern Ontario.

Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury and North Bay manage to rank worse than Timmins, with the Sault at 99th, Sudbury coming in at the 108 spot and North Bay ranking second last at 120th, ahead of only Montreal.

Timmins gets the highest ranking in Northeastern Ontario, coming in at 71, while Thunder Bay ranks 88th.

Peterborough comes in at 82nd, Orillia is 70th and Barrie ranks 26th.

The top spot goes to the periphery of Calgary, with Calgary proper ranking 45th.

Toronto ranks 80th, while its periphery also does much better, ranking 14th.

Collingwood, at the No. 5 spot, is the only Ontario city making the Top 10.

The rest are in B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan.
