Timmins' ski hill has a new name.

Kamiskotia Snow Resort has been rebranded as Mount Jamieson Resort. According to the announcement, the organization is also taking on a new direction — focusing on being a regional hub for all-season excellence to ensure its future viability.

"As the organization looks to new horizons and broaden its revenues, a question arose as to how we do this under the Kamiskotia Snow Resort banner. Outside the limitations of COVID and under the theme of a silver lining, a conversation was borne on how we move the hill to become an all-season resort," said Cameron Grant, chair of the board of directors, in a news release.

"While the board had heavy work in formulating what the future of the hill may look like, the demographic shift and the challenge of attracting a younger generation gave way to a deeper look. Simply removing "snow" from the name would not suffice. The need to rip off the Band-Aid came from the realization of the name Kamiskotia in and of itself. Does it belong to our operation, and does it need to be returned to where it came? In the end, we reverted to our roots — Mount Jamieson."

Outside the ski season, Grant said the facility is used as a wedding venue rental, training centre, and they're hoping to move toward holding conferences.

There's also room for more outdoor activities during the warmer months.

“Utilizing the natural shape of the hill could present many opportunities for mountain bikers, fat bikers, hiking, wilderness enthusiasts and bird watchers. Sll of this just sort of lies dormant in the spring and summer season so we’re really not harnessing the power of what this hill could present to not only this community but the region,” he said.

The rebrand was launched at the organization's annual general meeting Nov. 21.

"There have been a few names for Mount Jamieson, namely the Timmins Ski Club and then Kamiskotia Ski Resort in 1995, but we needed to return to the root of our operation, drawing on the real name for the mountain and returning the name Kamiskotia to where it belongs. Under the banner of Mount Jamieson, the hill has an opportunity to reinvent itself and solidify its purpose as a revenue generator for the city, a centre for healthy activity for our community, and as a destination for sports excellence in the North," said Grant.
