Timmins public elementary schools will be closed to students twice next week.

If the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) doesn't reach a deal with the province by Jan. 31, local members with the District School Board Ontario North East (DSB1) will be on the picket line Feb. 3 for a one-day strike.

A province-wide one-day strike for all 83,000 ETFO members will happen Thursday, Feb. 6.

"In DSB1, ETFO represents elementary teachers. This withdrawal of services causes significant impact to our elementary schools, including our capacity to ensure student safety," reads a letter from Lesleigh Dye, DSB1 director of education.

"As a result, DSB1 elementary schools, including Grade 7 and 8 programs in Grade 7 to 12 schools, will be closed to students on Monday, Feb. 3 and Thursday, Feb. 6. Secondary schools will remain open to students."
