Timmins Police remind snowmobilers to stay off city streets

With the increasing amount of snow, and high snow banks in many areas of the city, the Timmins Police Service is reminding residents that snowmobilers are not permitted to drive on any city street or laneway.

With the increasing amount of snow, and high snow banks in many areas of the city, the Timmins Police Service is reminding residents that snowmobilers are not permitted to drive on any city street or laneway.

The only exception to this rule is if the street is listed as part of the OFSC snowmobile trail. In order to operate a snowmobile on roads which make up part of the trail system, drivers must be at least 16 years old and possess a valid driver’s license or snowmobile operator’s license. Trail permits must be affixed in the proper manner on each snowmobile using the trail system.

Driving a snowmobile on a city street or on city property that is not part of the OFSC snowmobile trail system poses a significant risk to motorists who may not expect to see a snowmobile on the roadway.

If taking snowmobiles on the trails, drivers must transport their snowmobiles to the trails using a trailer. Fines for driving snowmobiles in a restricted area range from $65 to $240 with the possibility of the snowmobile being towed.

Snowmobilers are encouraged to follow these regulations to ensure all residents have a safe and happy season.
