Timmins man accused of setting fire to tavern, apartment building

Accused was held in custody for a bail hearing this morning

The Timmins Police Service has charged a local man with arson and a number of other offences stemming from an incident which occurred during the evening hours of Thursday, Nov. 14 in South Porcupine.

Responding Timmins Police Service officers completed an investigation where the suspect is alleged to have caused damage to an apartment building window on Bruce Avenue and then proceeded to set fire to the building.

It is further alleged that the man then attended a local tavern in South Porcupine and made attempts to set fire to that building as well.

The Timmins Fire Department responded to both fire scenes and performed required fire suppression duties.

The suspect was located and arrested by the Timmins Police Service as they had ascertained the pertinent details concerning the events and took the suspect into custody.

As a result of the incident, Lyle McEvoy, 38, of Timmins, Ont., has been charged with:
    •    two counts of arson – disregard for human life contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    mischief over $5,000 contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    mischief under $5,000 contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada
    •    utter threats contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada

The accused was held in police custody awaiting a bail hearing slated for this morning at Provincial Court in Timmins to answer to the charges laid against him.
