Timmins council will be talking roads and tax rates tonight.

Council is meeting virtually for its first meeting of May.

Here are a few items on the agenda:

  • Transferring land between the Mattagami Region Conservation Authority (MRCA) and city is up for discussion. One of the proposals is to have the surface rights for Flinstone Park transferred to the City of Timmins. The park made headlines earlier this year after the MRCA tried to sell part of it. A separate agenda item could see the MRCA and city trade land. More details are available here.
  • Schumacher Coun. Joe Campbell wants to eliminate the new $3 user fee for people accessing the Deloro and Tisdale landfills and for the free allowable threshold to be reinstated at the Deloro landfill. The changes were put in place on Jan. 1.
  • Director of finance Natalie Moore will present the 2021 tax rates and ratios. In February, council approved the 2021 budget. This week's report shows the 2021 municipal levy is $74.3 million, which is an increase of $976,645 from 2020. The full presentation is available here.
  • Staff is recommending increasing the budget by $1 million for this year's asphalt paving projects. If approved, it would mean the total contract value for Miller Paving is $2.19 million. The increase would allow for an additional three kilometres of grind and pave, according to the report. The full report is available here.

The meeting starts at 6 p.m. You can watch it online here.
