If the recent spike in COVID-19 cases continues, the Timiskaming Health Unit warns additional public health restrictions may be imposed.

Today, the health unit provided an update on the situation in the region that covers Kirkland Lake to Temagami.

With the surge in cases, the health unit said it can't confirm where some people are picking up the virus and it makes containing the virus more difficult.

"Cases in Sudbury and Algoma are also increasing dramatically and those health units have had to put additional public health measures in place to reduce the spread of COVID-19. If our local trends continue, THU may have to put similar restrictions in place. Also of concern, our local hospitals are currently under significant pressures," reads the statement.

People who are the contacts of a case may receive a call from a number outside the district as provincial contact tracers are helping the health unit.

To date in the Timiskaming Health Unit region there have been 282 confirmed cases. Of those, 251 are recovered and three people have died. There are 28 known active cases, including one person in hospital.

The health unit is asking people to monitor for COVID symptoms before leaving the house. People with any symptoms, including minor ones, should stay home and complete the COVID-19 assessment tool to see if a test is required.

People should also wear a mask, physically distance, consider limiting contacts and get vaccinated, said the health unit.

For gathering indoors, the health unit recommends wearing a face covering when with people outside your household who are unvaccinated, partially vaccinated or if their status is unknown. People may consider removing their face covering with a group of fully vaccinated people.
