Temporary speed limit drop adds 26 seconds to detour: director

The limit on a 1.25 km stretch of Airport Road is dropping to 50 km/hr

The speed limit is temporarily dropping on a section of Airport Road.

While Connecting Link construction is being done on Algonquin Boulevard and trucks are rerouted around the downtown core, the speed limit on a section of the detour is dropping to 50 km/hr.

The change affects Airport Road from Laforest to about 1.25 kilometres south. It was approved by Timmins council at its Tuesday, April 27 meeting.

Since construction started on the Connecting Link earlier this month, director of public works engineering Pat Seguin said residents in the area of Kraft Creek bridge have raised concerns about getting in and out of driveways.

“We drove it on a few occasions and noticed that the traffic ... it’s changed significantly compared to what they’re used to and we felt it was just a proactive move to reduce the speed limit there. We certainly took into account our mining partners that haul, we’ve already increased their haul route,” he said.

Seguin said dropping the speed limit adds about 26 seconds to someone's drive.

Once work on the Connecting Link is done the speed limit will go back up to 70km/hr.
