Recently at the last Technology Tips With Trina, she talked about "Hidden Expenses" that could be saved with proper care, attention and education. The event was held in the Chamber conference room with about 15 people attending from many different areas of business and at one point she reached each one with her vast knowledge and good business sense.

Trina has a good knowledge of her craft and educated the benefits of good accounting software and how procedures need to be in place to avoid duplication of work, especially if a mistake is made and a vendor is paid twice. She says that this is very common and costs time and money for both parties.

Her explanations of company credit cards and the potential of being charged twice by first paying the credit card bill, then seeing a receipt on an expense report by the employee can be common if safe guards aren't in place. Trina explained it is better to have the employee pay first, then pay him/her for the expense.

Something that she sees is when a company has 30 days to pay a bill and they go past that date, a phone call is made to find out when payment is coming. Quite often companies offer to pay with a credit card. She reminds the group that not only have you waited 30+ days, if you accept this form of payment, it will cost you up to 3% in credit card transaction fees.

WSIB can be costly to an employer, especially is a claim has gone through as the rates go up. If a business has doubts if the injury happened at work or has any other concern, she suggests challenging the ruling and request an investigation.

Everyone has received a cheque where the signature has been placed by a rubber stamp or something along that line. The person with the stamp has total control which brings back a story TimminsToday did in January when Luc Lamarche of the Timmins Police discussed fraud. It can be read here.

Over 30 topics were laid out in 1 1/2 hours. Intense but very interesting!

Trina St. Amour is a person you don't want to miss.
