The Timmins Parkinson Superwalk is moving ahead this year, in a different format than usual.

It's taking place Saturday, Sept. 12.

To participate, people are being asked to exercise within their social circle to increase awareness about the growing number of people with Parkinsons.

“If you have a bubble, say eight to 10 people, that’s what we want you to do and get them to support you and walk with you or exercise with you. It doesn’t have to be walking, it can be any exercise,” said Sharon Montreuil, Timmins Parkinson support group facilitator.

Normally she said about 100 people participate locally. In 2019, $10,000 was raised.

“We’ve been doing it since 2011, so about 10 years, and we get a lot of participation from the community,” she said.

This summer, Parkinson Canada Superwalk has been promoting The Movement, encouraging participants to take part in 150 minutes of activity throughout August.

“One thing is constant in Parkinson’s journey is change and COVID-19 has meant change for a lot of us," she said. "This summer we’re focusing on keeping Canadians moving, so they have called it The Movement for the summer, and now we walk together on a path to end Parkinsons no matter what."

Because there isn't a group event this year to drop off donations, participants can collect pledges online or send a cheque to Parkinson Canada indicating the exercise was done in Timmins.

The mailing address is Parkinson Canada Superwalk, 4211 Yonge St. #316, North York, Ont., M2P 2A9.
