Heading into the Easter long weekend, local students are taking their computers and tablets home in case there is a switch to distance learning next week, according to a letter from the director of education.

In a letter dated today, District School Board Ontario North East's Lesleigh Dye explained the decision.

"Students will bring their technology home with them for the long weekend, in the unlikely event that we would have to transition to distance learning next week," she wrote.

"With COVID-19 cases on the rise provincially and in our communities, we want to be prepared to continue to support student learning."

The letter also notes the board doesn't anticipate the schools will be closed and that the decision is a "precautionary measure."

Spring break, rescheduled to the week of April 12, is also expected to go ahead.

“What I can assure families is that our intention is to proceed with the April break, but we’re not going to be reintegrating students back into schools without a heightened level of vigilance on that date,” said Stephen Lecce, Ontario Minister of Education, in a news conference today.

He said it's the province's "full commitment" to have students return to class after the break. He noted the will be increased vigilance and corresponding action to make sure students aren't going back with potential cases.
