The speed limit on sections of two South Porcupine streets is dropping.

At its Feb 4 meeting, Timmins council approved lowering the limit to 40 km/hr from 50 km/hr on Main Street between Essa and Powell, and Broadway from Main to Crawford.

The item was brought up by Coun. Mickey Auger, who said he's afraid a young child is going to get hurt.

“I find that cars, they drive up Main Street like it’s a raceway and I had complaints so I’d like to see it dropped down to 40 so we can have a little bit of control on Main Street and the safety of our kids going to school,” he said.

Auger explained that initially he wanted a school safety zone in the areas in question, until he talked to the Timmins Police Service traffic sergeant.

“He was telling me that a safety zone, skidoos cannot drive on Main Street. He said he recommends we lower the speed limit to 40 and the skidoos could go up and down Main Street," said Auger.
