Snowmobile trails closed for the season

Sledding season has come to an end.

The Timmins Snowmobile Club announced today that local Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Club trails are now listed as unavailable. Grooming operations have stopped in the area.

With snow and ice conditions "rapidly deteriorating", snowmobiling is extremely dangerous anywhere, according to the announcement.

"The only safe and sensible course of action for snowmobilers is to put away their sleds until next winter," said Gilbert Fortin, Timmins Snowmobile Club communications director, in a news release. "The risks of trying that 'one last ride' are simply too high now that spring thaw has commenced."

With the trails closed, access to snowmobile trails on private land is prohibited.

"On behalf of our clubs and volunteers, I want to thank all of the landowners who have generously allowed the use of their property for an OFSC snowmobile trail this winter," said Fortin. "We also appreciate the support of the many snowmobilers who bought trail permits to help pay their share of the cost of trail operations for the 2020/2021 past season for which lasted 9 wonderful weeks."

Volunteers will soon start planning and preparing for next winter.

Anyone interested in helping out can call club communications director Gilbert Fortin at 705-288-4499 or club president Patrick Dzijacky at 705-262-7037.
