For this time of year, the snow depth and water content is above normal, according to the Mattagami Region Conservation Authority (MRCA).

The information is included in the organization's first watershed update for 2019.

According to the report, throughout the Upper Mattagami Watershed, the water content variances are 134.6 per cent to 182.9 per cent above normal.

It notes the current forecast for the coming week has daytime temperatures ranging from -3 C to -15 C, with no major weather systems expected.

Other highlights are:

  • The ongoing winter drawdown of Mesomikenda, Mattagami Lake and Peter Long. The MRCA says the dams are set up to continue drawdown until refilling begins in April. Throughout the winter there have been higher than normal to normal inflows, with the Wawaitin passing inflows until March 15.
  • There is an unsually large amount of ice and snow buildup at area creeks, particularly Town Creek and Crawford Creek. The MRCA is closely monitoring the enclosed portions of the noted creeks.
  • The MRCA's flood forecase and warning manual is being updated and will be distributed to stakeholders within the next two weeks.
