Timmins Police Const. Bill Field, local Tim Hortons owners John Healy and Linda Venneri, and OPP Const. Paul Harrison reveal the total for the 2017 Tim Hortons Smile Cookie campaign in support of the D.A.R.E. program. Maija Hoggett/TimminsToday

The results are in for the 2017 Smile Cookie Campaign in Timmins.

In September, cookies were sold at local Tim Hortons for $1, with all the proceeds going to the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program in town.

This year's campaign raised $34,236, which is an increase over last year's event when just over $27,000 was raised.

Tim Hortons' John Healey said the success is due to the fantastic support from the community. He said local law enforcement also really helped to promote this year's campaign.

The money will help the local D.A.R.E. program cover the cost of supplies and run activities such as its new leadership camp.

In Timmins, D.A.R.E. is offered to Grade 6 and Grade 8 students. Organizers are also looking to expand its reach to high school students in the new year.
