Antoine Garwah receives the Heart of Gold Civic Recognition Award from Timmins Mayor Michelle Boileau.

With more than five decades of volunteering under his belt, a leader in the local science community is receiving recognition.

Science Timmins president Antoine Garwah is the latest resident to pick up the Heart of Gold Civic Award. It was presented by Mayor Michelle Boileau at the start of yesterday's (April 16) council meeting.

Garwah has been president of Science Timmins since 1970 and was nominated by the Science Timmins board of directors for his decades of commitment to teaching and delivering science, technology and mathematics (STEM) education and events.

"Along with other community volunteers, Garwah has raised funds to organize and host annual regional science fairs, Science Olympics, robotic competitions, and more. His commitment to the pursuit of STEM knowledge and experiment resulted in Timmins becoming a host city for the Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF) in 1998," reads a city news release.

"Garwah is also credited with raising funds and designing the present-day Science Village in Timmins. His latest accomplishment is an exciting partnership with the Canadian Space Agency, which allows local youth to launch scientific experiments at the Timmins Stratospheric Balloon Base."

Recipients of the Heart of Gold recognition program are being honoured monthly at a council meeting.

Nominations can be made for volunteer and community service, youth community and civic engagement, achievement in sports, and achievement in STEAM. More details on the program and the nomination form are available here.
