The Timmins Police Service will be actively involved in the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) national safety campaign titled “Operation Impact” which focuses on making Canadian roads the safest in the world.

Oct. 7 through to Oct. 10 have been identified as the dates for this police initiative designed to remind people that an essential part of law enforcement is to save lives and reduce injuries on our roadways. Educating the public about safe driving practices is a priority.

The focus will be on those driving behaviors that jeopardize personal safety, specifically: impaired driving, seat belt neglect, distracted driving and aggressive driving.

Timmins police Traffic Sergeant Tom Chypyha is quoted “Collisions resulting in death and injury due to carelessness behind the wheel are preventable.”

The Thanksgiving weekend is a perfect opportunity for law enforcement to remind the motoring public of their inherent obligations to be safe, alert and sober behind the wheel.

This is a public education initiative but enforcement officers will be strict with all motorists who choose to drive in a manner that poses a direct threat to public safety.

Proper seat belt usage, aggressive driving and the use of hand held devices will be addressed by means of the issuance of Offence Notices with applicable fines and demerit points attached.

Deriver sobriety will also be addressed by means of suspensions, impounding of vehicles and arrests where necessary.

The Timmins Police Service is dedicated to meeting the goals of Operation Impact and need the local motoring public to address their own behaviors accordingly.
