Rain's on the way and it could cause flooding

'High water levels and flows can be especially dangerous and stream banks can be slippery. Please keep children and pets away from fast-flowing rivers and  streams'

A rain warning is in effect and it could meaning flooding in some areas.

Right now, the Mattagami Region Conservation Authority (MRCA) says that local rivers, creeks and streams are flowing at normal levels.

When the forecasted rain hits, localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible, said the MRCA in a statement today. Heavy downpours could also cause flash floods and water pooling on the roads in areas with poor drainage.

A rainfall warning is in effect for Timmins and Cochrane.

Starting later today and into tomorrow, Environment Canada forecasts that there could be 30 to 60 millimetres of rain. The rain may turn into snow in some areas before tapering off on Friday night.

Because the ground is still frozen, the MRCA said the ground has reduced ability to absorb it.

The MRCA is warning residents to use extreme caution near rivers, creeks and streams.

"High water levels and flows can be especially dangerous and stream banks can be slippery. Please keep children and pets away from fast-flowing rivers and  streams," reads the statement.
