Sometimes regarded as "only blankets," quilts are now also considered works of art to be displayed.

The Timmins Museum in collaboration with the Timmins Quilter’s Guild has provided a wonderful opportunity to showcase the beauty of local artists’ handiwork.

Each year the president of the guild issues a challenge to the members. This year it was to create a quilt using appliqué.

The colourful array of quilts feature techniques such as English paper piecing, blind hem, needleturn and machine appliqué. A special workshop which taught appliqué resulted in the lovely miniature quilts of Hollinger houses.

Not all quilts that were submitted utilize these techniques but are included simply for their incredible artistry.

This exhibition includes something for everyone to enjoy: modern and traditional, whimsical and realistic, subtle shades and bright colours. The quilters’ abilities range from beginner to master level.

If you are interested in becoming part of a guild, come be our guest.

This warm and welcoming group meets twice a month on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. at Covenant Church.

The show runs from May 2 to 26. Come as often as you like to this free event and bring a friend.

We are sure you will enjoy this special presentation where each quilter brings her sense of style to the quilt through colour choice, fabric selection, pattern, quilt design and embellishments. Not only has the Timmins Quilters’ Guild created beautiful art but some of the can even be used to ward off the chill of a cool Timmins’ night.
