The Downtown BIA Timmins is actively working on QR codes that will describe murals across the city in three languages.
The only mural that has a sign with the QR codes and the descriptions in English, French and Cree is located at the Porcupine Advance Printers and Signs on Algonquin Boulevard.
The description in Cree was provided by Angela Shisheesh from Ojibway and Cree Cultural Centre, said BIA executive director Cindy Campbell.
Campbell, who took part in the downtown mural tour Wednesday, said the BIA will use the information about the murals provided by Coun. Kristin Murray.
She said the signs with QR codes will come up one at a time. The codes will take people to YouTube where they can listen to a description of the mural in English, French or Cree.
The murals outside of downtown Timmins are expected to have QR codes as well, according to Campbell.
"We're working on it as fast as we can, so watch for them," she said.
Campbell said it's important for people to understand the significance of the Indigenous culture to Timmins.
“We felt it was important for people to understand what those are as explained by the elders to the youth. Without telling the story in detail, people wouldn’t understand exactly what the mural represents to the culture,” Campbell said. “We felt it was important to get that information and share it, so future generations can enjoy the murals and the meanings behind them.”
