Potential COVID exposure on Timmins flight

A potential COVID-19 exposure advisory has been issued for a Timmins flight.

It is for the Wednesday, April 28 Air Canada flight AC8289 with a scheduled departure of 6:25 p.m. from Toronto to Timmins. It especially affects people who sat in rows four to eight, according to the Porcupine Health Unit.

"Passengers in these rows must self-isolate immediately and call their local public health unit," reads the bulletin.

Other people on the flight are asked to self-monitor and contact their local health unit if they experience symptoms.

Typical COVID-19 symptoms are:

  • fever
  • new or worsening cough
  • shortness of breath 
  • loss of sense of smell or taste 
  • sore throat or hoarse voice 
  • difficulty swallowing 
  • runny nose or nasal congestion 
  • nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain 

Atypical symptoms are:

  • unexplained fatigue or malaise 
  • muscle aches
  • delirium
  • unexplained or increased number of falls 
  • acute functional decline 
  • exacerbation of current chronic conditions 
  • chills 
  • headaches 
  • croup 
  • conjuctivitis

Today, 12 new cases have been reported in Timmins.

Outbreaks have also been declared at Friends Forever Childcare Centre and Newmont Porcupine Dome Mine. Each of the locations has two confirmed cases that are linked to the workplace.

To date, there have been 627 confirmed cases of the virus in the region. Of those, 468 are recovered and 26 people have died. There are 133 known active cases.

There are COVID-19 assessment centres in Timmins, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Matheson, Kapuskasing, Smooth Rock Falls, Hearst, and Hornepayne, as well as communities on the James Bay coast.
