Police seize $23,000 worth of contraband tobacco at traffic stop

KIRKLAND LAKE - On May 11, 2019 at 10:34 a.m., members of the Kirkland Lake Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a traffic complaint on Highway 11 in Grenfell Township, Ont.  

Police stopped the vehicle and began an investigation which revealed the driver to be in possession of a large amount contraband tobacco. The seizure has an estimated street value of over $23,000.   

As a result, the OPP have arrested and charged Anthony Delorme, 53 years old, of Timmins, Ont., with the following:   

  • Possess unmarked cigarettes for sale, contrary to section 29(1) of the Tobacco Tax Act (TTA), and
  • Possess unmarked cigarettes, contrary to section 29(2) of the TTA

The driver was released by way of summons and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Kirkland Lake, on Sept. 3, 2019.
