Police find suspected cocaine, a weapon on man in Kirkland Lake

He allegedly ran from police, but was apprehended after a short foot pursuit

KIRKLAND LAKE - On June 30, 2019, members of the Kirkland Lake Detachment of Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) stopped a pedestrian for a Liquor Licence Act (LLA) offence on Prospect Avenue in the Town of Kirkland Lake, Ont. 

While speaking with the accused, he ran from police and was apprehended after a short foot pursuit. Further investigation revealed that he was in possession of drugs suspected to be cocaine, a prohibited weapon and a large amount of Canadian currency. The seizure has a total street value of $2,600.   

Danny Chanderdat, age 27, of Brampton, Ont., was charged with the following:  

  • Possession of a schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking - cocaine, contrary to section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA),
  • Obstruct peace officer, contrary to section 129(a) of the Criminal Code (CC),
  • Unauthorized possession of weapon, contrary to section 91(2) of the CC,
  • Knowledge of unauthorized possession of weapon, contrary to section 92(2) of the CC, and
  • Having liquor in open container in other than licenced premises, residence or private place, contrary to section 31(2) of the LLA. 

The accused was released on a promise to appear and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on Aug. 8, 2019, in Kirkland Lake.
