Hearst man arrested after allegedly brandishing 'edged weapon' at police

HEARST – On April 13, 2016, at approximately 8:00 p.m., the James Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was advised of someone causing a disturbance and uttering threats on 6th Street in the Town of Hearst, Ontario.

Police attended the scene and attempted to arrest the individual. During the arrest, the male brandished an edged weapon and charged at police.

Police used a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW) to effectively subdued the male.

The suspect was transported via ambulance to the hospital, was treated and released for minor injuries.

Frank Peltonen, 49, of Hearst, Ontario, was arrested and charged with the following offences:

  • Uttering Threats to Cause Death contrary to section 264.1(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada (CC)
  • Assaulting Peace Officer with a Weapon contrary to section 270.01(1)(a) (CC).

The accused was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cochrane, Ontario on April 18, 2016.
