As the old song goes, Who Could Ask for Anything More? That was certainly the case at the Roland Michener Cross Country Challenge, held on Friday on the grounds of the Northern College campus.

The day included perfect weather, ideal running conditions, enthusiastic participants, and plenty of supportive family and team members.

“Considering that we are late into October, we could not have asked for a better day,” race organizers John Bohdanec and Shannon Daly agreed.

“That’s the beauty of cross country running. Regardless of the weather, the race goes on. In the past, we have seen rain, high winds, snow, frost, and the infamous mud run. This was ideal. Approximately 350 runners participated in Friday’s event and there was representation from all three regions of District School Board Ontario North East, as teams travelled from Englehart, Kapuskasing, and Iroquois Falls, to join our local schools in the day. Special thanks to Paula Rich, Mike Anderson, and Joel Gibson, for bringing their teams and supporting our event,” Bohdanec and Daly added.

Some excellent run times were posted and all participants demonstrated good sportsmanship, supporting both their own team mates, as well as runners from other schools. The courses provided enough challenge for each division, and it was evident at the finish line that the runners gave their best efforts during the races, leaving it all out on the track.

Special thanks to Andy Glembus and Carrie Ann Bettiol, from Northern College, for their help in ensuring that the venue created the perfect setting for the run.

Timmins Police Services Constables McGaghran and Tambeau provided four-wheeler support; guiding the racers and making sure all runners safely completed their respective runs.

Porcupine Springs and Roztek assisted in sponsoring the event, and their support was greatly appreciated. Ms. Olevason’s Grade 10/11 girls’ Physical Education class contributed toward running the day, acting as starters, timers, marshals, and coordinating registration. They did a great job.

Special acknowledgements go out to Shannon Daly, Shelby Deacon, and Karlee Lefebvre, for all their tireless efforts towards making the day run smoothly.
