On Thursday, Apr. 20, at approximately 1 p.m., Timmins Police officers attended a collision involving an SUV and a pedestrian at the intersection of Algonquin Boulevard. and Spruce Street.

As a result of the collision, a female pedestrian was transported to hospital with minor injuries. The investigation into the collision is ongoing.

Yesterday’s incident is the 10th collision this year involving a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle. With this in mind, police are reminding both drivers and pedestrians to remain cautious when sharing the road.

Safety tips for drivers include looking for pedestrians, especially when turning; driving extra cautiously through community safety zones, residential, or high-traffic areas; and being patient with seniors, children, or anyone who needs extra time to cross the roadway.

Pedestrians are also reminded to cross only at designated cross walks; make eye contact with drivers to ensure they are seen; and watch for traffic, especially traffic turning at intersections or exiting driveways.

Fines for offenses involving pedestrians could range from $150 to $500 and three demerit points, and fines are doubled in Community Safety Zones.

With the warmer weather approaching, the public is reminded to keep these safety tips in mind so everyone is able to share the road safely.
