Timmins Police investigate death of infant — lay charges

The Timmins Police Service is continuing its investigation into an occurrence involving the death of a 4-month old infant in December of 2016.

On December 11, 2016 officers from the Timmins Police Service attended at Timmins & District Hospital for a report of suspicious injuries to a 4-month old baby.

An investigation was initiated, and the baby was transported to the Children`s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO). On December 14, 2016 the infant succumbed to its injuries and passed away.

A comprehensive investigation was undertaken by the Criminal Investigation Division of the Timmins Police Service with the assistance of the Timmins Police Forensic Identification Unit.

As a result of the investigation, a 23-year-old man and 19-year-old woman have been charged with failing to provide necessities of life to a child as well as causing death by criminal negligence, contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada.

Due to the sensitive nature of the incident, the names of the accused persons and the victim will not be released by police, but police can confirm that the accused persons are the parents of the victim.

Both accused persons were arrested on January 31, 2017 by the Timmins Police Service and remain in custody awaiting a bail hearing slated for this morning at Provincial Court in Timmins.
