While the region's top doctor is pleased with the ongoing success of this weekend's COVID-19 vaccination blitz, the record number of cases this weekend is "extremely alarming."

In three days — Friday to Sunday — there were 167 new COVID cases confirmed across the Porcupine Health Unit region.

"The record number of cases seen across the district this weekend is extremely alarming. With this, our area continues to see a record number of cases and outbreaks, increased hospital admission, an increase in the severity of infections and COVID-19 infections in younger people. During this third wave, the average age of individuals with COVID-19 is between 30 and 35 years of age," reads the health unit news release.

A vaccination blitz is being held this weekend in Timmins.

As of last night, the health unit reported more than 1,500 people had received their first dose of the Pfizer vaccine during the blitz.

It kicked off Friday with an outdoor walk-in clinic and wraps up today with a clinic at the Mountjoy Arena, which is now open to walk-ins in addition to the appointments people already booked. It runs from noon to 8 p.m.

Today's clinic is open to anyone 12 years and older.
