A COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at the Temiskaming Shores Minor Hockey Association (TSMHA).

It was announced by the Timiskaming Health Unit (THU) today. The announcement does not say how many cases have been confirmed in the association.

"An outbreak is declared when two people have tested positive with an epidemiological link. An epidemiological link means that they could have become infected with COVID-19 at TSMHA, either from each other or from another common source," reads the announcement.

"The Timiskaming Health Unit has been working closely with TSMHA to ensure all necessary contact tracing and testing is being completed. TSMHA is taking all the necessary precautions to reduce the risk of infection and prevent the transmission of COVID-19."

The investigation is ongoing. Close contacts have either been contacted or will be contacted by the health unit.

Students at Ecole catholique St-Michel in New Liskeard moved to virtual learning today as over 60 per cent of students are absent after being exposed to COVID-19. At least seven students have tested positive, according to Public Health Ontario.

There are six active outbreak in the THU area, which runs from Kirkland Lake to Temagami.

Other than the hockey association, the outbreaks are at Kirkland Lake Gold, Ecole catholique St-Michel, Nor-Arc Steel Fabricators, Temiskaming Printing and Englehart Public School.

To date in the THU area, there have been 469 confirmed cases. Of those, 414 are recovered and three people have died. There are 52 known active cases, including two people in hospital.
