Over 100 people came to hear the message presented by Mayor Tom Laughren today at the Dante Club. Optimism was in the air followed by many positives about what has been accomplished during the past year. This years theme "Success Ahead! Map Your Future Growth" was very fitting as much of the one hour talk was about the Strategic Plan. " This is one plan that is not collecting dust on the shelf" says Mayor Tom. City Council made decisions that paved the way for Porter Airlines to come to Timmins, now we have 10 flights a day to Toronto. Over 1 million dollars of airport improvment funds were invested in the airport. TEDC, the Venture Centre and the DCSSAB confirmed funding fora Social Planning Council. They coordinate policy and programming for social issues such as homelessness, marginalization, and sustainability of non-profit agencies. A successful communication solution to let the public know what is being done to make the city a better place has been put in place with a website, Facebook page, monthly news letters, media coverage and regular public updates to council. To date, between all the projects that have been worked on, over 3000 people have participated. The brand and logo "I'm in", a common marketing tool came to life recently. There was never a common message that could be used in marketing materials before until now. The logo originated from our city name tI'MmINs. It's a great reflection of who we are and how we want people to see us.

Today, it was announced that there is one common community calendar for all events in the city. This can be found at http://www.timminseventscalendar.ca . (It looks terrific!) All events hosted on timmins.ca and tourismtimmins.com have been migrated to the new site. Tourism makes up 9% of our economy,  employing 2000 people in 175 business in this sector. "We need to understand how to  nurture and encourage more tourism, and this plan (2020) will help us do that".

Mayor Tom did talk about the drop in gold prices over the past 3 months and feels this is a temporary setback as gold has risen and fallen for the past century. “We have been extremely fortunate to see unprecedented growth in many sectors of our city’s economy at a time when many communities throughout North America and Europe were looking for ways to weather the economic storm,”
