OPP select new James Bay Detachment Commander

KAPUSKASING - North East Region OPP announces Staff Sergeant S.J. (Shaun) Crabbe as the new Detachment Commander of the James Bay OPP Detachments. Staff Sergeant Crabbe will be promoted to Inspector effective August 19, 2019.  

Staff Sergeant Crabbe began his career with the OPP in the Owen Sound area. He was initially posted to Grey County Detachment in West Region upon graduation from the Ontario Police College and the Provincial Police Academy. Within this posting he performed specialized frontline duties, including Coach Officer, Scenes of Crime Officer and Breath Technician.  

Staff Sergeant Crabbe was seconded as a Detective Constable to the Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau - Drug Enforcement Unit. This secondment involved large scale, multi-jurisdictional drug and organized crime investigations throughout southwestern Ontario.  

At the conclusion of those duties, Staff Sergeant Crabbe was posted to the Bruce Peninsula Detachment which included the summer detachments of Sauble Beach and Tobermory. Here he performed the duties of a front line Constable, an Administration Sergeant and Platoon Sergeant - Team Leader.  

Staff Sergeant Crabbe is an experienced Detachment Commander (DC); in 2012 he transferred to North West Region where he served as DC at OPP Detachments in Pickle Lake, Red Lake and Kenora which included the provision of policing services to multiple Indigenous communities. He transferred to the North East Region in April 2019, where he is currently serving as the DC of the West Parry Sound Detachment.  

Staff Sergeant Crabbe is a designated OPP Critical Incident Commander (CIC). CICs command and oversee the OPP's integrated response to high risk incidents such as, but not limited to: hostage takings, armed barricaded subjects, high risk warrant executions, high risk canine tracks, high risk VIP and witness protection and any other situation requiring the operational deployment of specific specialized resources.
