Ontario reports 781 new COVID cases Friday

The latest update noted 625 recoveries and 17 deaths, but 14 of those deaths occurred more than two months ago

Public Health Ontario reported 781 new COVID cases today for Aug. 26. 

The latest update noted 625 recoveries and 17 deaths, but 14 of those deaths occurred more than two months ago.

The Aug. 27 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • Of the new cases reported today, 485 were unvaccinated people, 83 were partially vaccinated, 147 were fully vaccinated, and 66 are listed as vaccination status unknown (missing health card information).
  • 5,444 active, lab-confirmed cases, up from 5,305 yesterday.
  • 306 COVID-positive people are currently hospitalized in Ontario.
  • Hospitalized cases (excluding ICU) include 140 unvaccinated people, 16 partially vaccinated, and 27 full vaccinated.
  • There are 128 COVID-positive patients in intensive care, plus another 30 patients who no longer test positive for COVID-19. 
  • 67 COVID patients are on ventilators and another 20 patients on ventilators no longer test positive for COVID-19.
  • ICU and ventilated cases include 90 unvaccinated people, six partially vaccinated, and nine fully vaccinated.
  • 9,867,920 Ontarians (about 66 per cent of the total population) have been fully vaccinated and another 905,760 have a single dose of COVID vaccine.
  • The province reported 30,063 tests were processed yesterday, resulting in a three per cent positivity rate. Provincial labs have processed 17.1 million tests to date.
  • Of the new cases reported today 185 are from Toronto, 96 are from Peel, 33 are from Simcoe-Muskoka, and 93 are from York Region.
  • Today's cases include 110 individuals under 12 years old, 101 youth between 12 and 19 years old, 340 people between 20 and 39 years old, 165 people between 40 and 59 years old, 54 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 13 people over 79 years old.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 562,756 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 547,823 recoveries and 9,489 deaths.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 3,819.4 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

Ontario's average weekly incidence rate last week was 28.8 cases per 100,000 people, which is up by 21 per cent from the week of Aug. 11.

Northern Ontario

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 426 cases, weekly rate of 9.3 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 425 cases. There are 14 known active cases.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 667 cases, weekly rate of 3.1 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 669 cases. There are eight known active cases.
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 2,163 cases, weekly rate of 5.9 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 2,161 cases. There are eight known active cases.
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 2,247 cases, weekly rate of 14.1 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 2,268 cases. There are 45 known active cases. 
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 209 cases, weekly rate of 0 cases per 100,000 people. There are no known active cases.
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 1,120 cases, weekly rate of 3.7 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,118 cases. There are five known active cases.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 3,357 cases, weekly rate of 1.9 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 3,358 cases. There are four known active cases.
