Ontario reports 531 new COVID cases Thursday

Public Health Ontario reported 531 new COVID cases in today's update (Aug. 19). 

Today's update noted 338 recoveries and 17 deaths, but 15 of the deaths occurred more than two months ago. 

There have been 20 new hospitalizations since yesterday's report. Five people have been admitted to intensive care units with COVID-19. 

The Aug. 19 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • Among today's cases were 203 unvaccinated people, 49 partially vaccinated people, and 79 fully vaccinated people. 
  • 4,243 active, lab-confirmed cases, up from 34,067 yesterday.
  • 176 COVID-positive people are currently hospitalized in Ontario.
  • Among the COVID-19 patients hospitalized but not in the ICU are 61 unvaccinated people, seven partially vaccinated, and 14 fully vaccinated. 
  • ICU case data was not available from the province today.
  • 9,670,921 Ontarians have been fully vaccinated.
  • The province reported 26,213 tests were processed yesterday, resulting in a 2.4 per cent positivity rate. 
  • There are 13,142 tests still awaiting processing, and the provincial labs have processed 16.9 million tests to date.
  • Of the new cases reported today, 116 are from Toronto, 63 cases are from Peel, 25 are from Simcoe-Muskoka, three are from Grey-Bruce, and 62 are from York Region.
  • Today's cases include 71 individuals under 12 years old, 53 youth between 12 and 19 years old, 261 people between 20 and 39 years old, 106 people between 40 and 59 years old, 33 people between 60 and 79 years old, and five people over 79 years old.

*The vaccination status breakdown may not include all new cases because of missing health card information.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 557,451 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 543,760 recoveries and 9,448 deaths.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 3,783.4 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

Ontario's average weekly incidence rate is 22.3 cases per 100,000 people, which is up by 42.9 per cent from the week of Aug. 3.

Northern Ontario

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 413 cases, weekly rate of 1.7 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 414 cases. There are six known active cases.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 659 cases, weekly rate of 3.1 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 661 cases. There is one known active case.
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 2,155 cases, weekly rate of 1.2 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 2,157 cases. There are five known active cases.
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 2,211 cases, weekly rate of 7.8 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 2,231 cases. There are 26 known active cases. .
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 209 cases, weekly rate of 0 cases per 100,000 people. There are no known active cases.
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 1,111 cases, weekly rate of 8.6 cases per 100,000 people. There are seven known active cases.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 3,352 cases, weekly rate of 1.3 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 3,353 cases. There are five known active cases.
