Ontario reports 526 new COVID cases Monday

Public Health Ontario reported 526 new COVID cases in today's update (Aug. 16). 

Today's update noted 321 recoveries and zero deaths.

The August 16 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 3,872 active, lab-confirmed cases, up from 3,667 yesterday.
  • 108 COVID-positive people are currently hospitalized in Ontario.
  • There are 92 COVID-positive people in intensive care units, another 27 patients in the ICU with COVID-related illness who no longer test positive for COVID-19.
  • 49 COVID-positive are on ventilators, and another 17 patients ventilated because of COVID no longer test positive.
  • The province reported 15,784 tests were processed yesterday, resulting in a 2.7 per cent positivity rate. 
  • There are 6,085 tests still awaiting processing, and the provincial labs have processed 16.8 million tests to date.
  • Of the new cases reported today, 128 are from Toronto, 83 cases are from Peel, 18 are from Simcoe-Muskoka, four are from Grey-Bruce, and 66 are from York Region.
  • Today's cases include 52 individuals under 12 years old, 54 youth between 12 and 19 years old, 268 people between 20 and 39 years old, 107 people between 40 and 59 years old, 35 people between 60 and 79 years old, and nine people over 79 years old.

Vaccination status

The vaccination breakdown for new cases is as follows: 

  • New cases include 353 unvaccinated, 60 partially vaccinated, and 113 fully vaccinated. 
  • Hospitalized (non-ICU) cases include 68 unvaccinated, six partially vaccinated, and 11 fully vaccinated.
  • ICU cases include 53 unvaccinated, four partially vaccinated, and one fully vaccinated.

Today's vaccination rate update includes:

  • 26,033 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered yesterday.
  • 20,213,876 doses of vaccine have been administered.
  • In total, 9,583,506 people have been fully vaccinated.
  • 63.6 per cent of the total population of Ontario has received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Total case counts and rates

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 554,472 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 541,946 recoveries and 9,416 deaths.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 3,774.2 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

Ontario's average weekly incidence rate is 19.8 cases per 100,000 people, which is up by 65 per cent from the week of July 31.

Northern Ontario

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 409 cases, weekly rate of 0.8 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 410 cases. There are four known active cases.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 660 cases, weekly rate of 3.9 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 661 cases. There are two known active cases. 
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 2,152 cases, weekly rate of 1.2 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 2,154 cases. There are four known active cases.
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 2,200 cases, weekly rate of 10.2 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 2,214 cases. There are 26 known active cases. 
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 209 cases, weekly rate of 3 cases per 100,000 people. There is one known active case.
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 1,109 cases, weekly rate of 7.4 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,106 cases. There are four known active cases.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 3,352 cases, weekly rate of 3.8 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 3,351 cases. There are three known active cases.
