Ontario reports 3,443 new COVID cases today

Public Health Ontario has reported 3,443 new cases of COVID-19 today, (Jan. 9).

The province has reported 42 deaths today, but also removed two deaths previously reported (individuals between 20 and 39 years old) from the list, resulting in an overall increase of 40 deaths. Of those, 26 were residents of long-term care homes.

Three of the deaths reported today were individuals between 40 and 59 years old, nine were between 60 and 79 years old, and 30 were over the age of 80. 

Since yesterday, 140 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19, and 18 COVID patients have been admitted to intensive care units.

The Jan. 9 updates provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data collected for Jan. 8:

  • 2,915 new recoveries
  • 1,457 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, up from 1,446 reported yesterday. 
  • There are 382 COVID patients in intensive care units (up from 369 yesterday) and 244 COVID patients on ventilators (down from 250 yesterday). 
  • 28,691 current active cases in Ontario, which is up from 28,203 reported yesterday
  • The province reported 72,900 tests processed yesterday resulting in a 5.3 per cent positivity rate. The province's goal is three per cent. 
  • There is a backlog of 61,228 tests awaiting processing.
  • Of the 3,443 cases reported today, 1,070 are from Toronto, 548 are from Peel, 303 are from York Region, and 71 are from Simcoe-Muskoka.
  • Based on case data reported today, the new cases include 491 people under 20, 1,261 people between 20 and 39 years old, 979  people between 40 and 59 years old, 494 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 213 people over the age of 80.
  • There are 240 ongoing, active outbreaks at long-term care homes in the province, 151 active outbreaks at retirement homes, and 74 active outbreaks at hospitals. 
  • There were 15,700 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on Jan. 8, up from 14,932 on Jan. 7.
  • As of 8 p.m. on Jan. 8, the province reports 103,263 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
  • There are 5,880 total vaccinations completed (both doses). The vaccine approved for use requires two doses given 21 days apart. 

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 211,837 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 178,224 recoveries and 4,922 deaths, of which 2,943 were individuals living in long-term care homes

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 1,425 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario. The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 148.4 cases per 100,000 people from Dec. 30 to Jan. 5, which is an increase of 27.9 per cent compared to Dec. 24-30 when the average weekly incidence rate was 116 cases per 100,000 people.
