Ontario reports 296 new COVID cases Tuesday, with data catchup included

Today's update includes 80 cases and 54 deaths that are part of a data cleaning initiative and date back as far as 2020

Public Health Ontario has reported 296 new COVID-19 cases in its latest report (June 22), but also notes today's update includes cases from 2020 and previously unreported deaths.

According to the province, today's summary includes about 80 cases from 2020 that are part of a data catch-up by Toronto Public Health.

There are 60 new deaths included in the latest report, and 54 of those, though not previously reported, are from past months and are also the result of a "data cleaning initiative." 

Today's update also includes 442 new recoveries. 

The June 22 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 3,248 active, lab-confirmed cases, down from 3,454 yesterday.
  • 334 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, up from 261 yesterday.
  • There are 314 patients in intensive care units because of COVID-19 (58 of those people no longer test positive for COVID-19) and 202 COVID patients on ventilators (even with yesterday).
  • The province reported 16,784 tests were processed yesterday, resulting in a 1.6 per cent positivity rate. 
  • There are 11,986 tests still awaiting processing, and the provincial labs have processed 15.7 million tests to date.
  • Of the new cases reported today, 123 are from Toronto (including 80 cases from 2020), 20 cases are from Peel, and 37 are from York Region.
  • Today's cases include 60 individuals aged 19 and under, 94 people between 20 and 39 years old, 75 people between 40 and 59 years old, 52 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 14 people aged 80 and over.

Vaccines

  • There were 199,535 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered yesterday, up from 118,625 doses administered on June 20.
  • 12,869,310 doses of vaccine have been administered.
  • In total, 3,145,372 people have been fully vaccinated.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 542,764 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 530,434 recoveries and 9,082 deaths.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 3,651.4 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

Ontario's average weekly incidence rate is 17.3 cases per 100,000 people, which is down by 26.4 per cent from the prior seven-day period. 

Northern Ontario

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 399 cases, weekly rate of  0.9 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 398 cases. There are three known active cases. 
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 532 cases, weekly rate of 33.1 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 534  cases. There are 52 known active cases. 
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 1,977 cases, weekly rate of 154.6 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,969 cases. There are 202 known active cases. 
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 2,125 cases, weekly rate of 5.5 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 2,145 cases. There are 28 known active cases. 
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 207 cases, weekly rate of 0 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 208. There are no known active cases. 
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 1,079 cases, weekly rate of 8 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,077. There are five known active cases, including one active case outside of the catchment area.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 3,330 cases, weekly rate of 11.3 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 3,331 cases. There are 12 known active cases. 

The data from Northern Ontario health units is based on what was available at 10:30 a.m. today.
