Ontario reports 2,170 new COVID cases Monday

Today's report also includes 2,953 recoveries, 51 new hospitalizations, and four deaths.

Public Health Ontario has reported 2,170 new cases of COVID-19 today (May 17). 

Today's report includes 2,953 recoveries and four new deaths.

The deaths reported today include one person between 40 and 59 years old, two people between 60 and 79 years old, and one person over 79 years old. 

Since yesterday, the province has reported 51 new hospitalizations and nine new admissions of COVID-19 patients to intensive care units.

The May 17 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 25,869 active, lab-confirmed cases, which is down from 26,656 reported yesterday. 
  • 1,320 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, up from 1,292 reported yesterday. 
  • There are 779 patients in intensive care units because of COVID-19 (down from 785 yesterday) and 536 COVID patients on ventilators (down from 552 reported yesterday).
  • The province reported 24,498 tests were processed yesterday resulting in a 7.9 per cent positivity rate.
  • Another 8,960 tests are still under investigation and/or being processed. To date, 14.7 million tests have been completed.
  • Of the new cases reported today, 566 are from Toronto, 556 cases are from Peel, 215 are from York Region, and 59 are from Simcoe-Muskoka.
  • Today's cases include 434 individuals aged 19 and under, 878 people between 20 and 39 years old, 598 people between 40 and 59 years old, 215 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 42 people aged 80 and over.

Vaccines

  • There were 112,330 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on May 16. 
  • As of 6 p.m. on May 17, the province reported 7,177,145 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
  • In total, 432,760 people have been fully vaccinated.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 511,486 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 477,128 recoveries and 8,489 deaths, of which 3,939 were individuals living in long-term care facilities.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 3,441 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

Ontario's average weekly incidence rate is 117.8 cases per 100,000 people, which is down by 19.5 per cent from last week (May 1to May 7).

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 365 cases, weekly rate of  17.5 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 364 cases. There are 30 known active cases. 
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 407 cases, weekly rate of 19.3 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 414 cases. There are 43 known active cases. 
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 875 cases, weekly rate of 143.8 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 879 cases. There were 194 active cases as of Friday.
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 2,034 cases, weekly rate of 22.1 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 2,054 cases. There are 60 known active cases. 
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 197 cases, weekly rate of 15.3 cases per 100,000 people. There are two known active cases. 
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 1,033 cases, weekly rate of 35.4 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,032 cases. There are 30 known active cases.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 3,165 cases, weekly rate of 18 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 3,168 cases. There are 29 known active cases.
