Ontario reports 1,616 new COVID cases Tuesday

Today's report includes 2,502 recoveries and 17 new deaths

Public Health Ontario has reported 1,616 new cases of COVID-19 today (May 17). 

Today's report includes 2,502 recoveries and 17 new deaths.

The May 17 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 1,484 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, up from 1,320 reported yesterday. 
  • There are 764 patients in intensive care units because of COVID-19 (down from 779 yesterday) and 559 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 536 reported yesterday).
  • Of the new cases reported today, 472 are from Toronto, 360 cases are from Peel, and 116 are from York Region
  • Today's cases include 349 individuals aged 19 and under, 688 people between 20 and 39 years old, 392 people between 40 and 59 years old, 168 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 25 people aged 80 and over.

Vaccines

  • As of 6 p.m. on May 17, the province reported 7,286,177 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 513,102 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 479,630 recoveries and 8,506 deaths.

Ontario's average weekly incidence rate is 114.3 cases per 100,000 people, which is down by 18.5 per cent from the previous seven-day period.

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 365 cases, weekly rate of  14.9 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 368 cases. There are 28 known active cases. 
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 415 cases, weekly rate of 17.7 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 417 cases. There are 41 known active cases. 
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 882 cases, weekly rate of 170.2 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 885 cases. There are 254 known active cases.
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 2,034 cases, weekly rate of 21.1 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 2,055 cases. There are 56 known active cases. 
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 198 cases, weekly rate of 3.1 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 197 cases. There are two known active cases. 
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 1,034 cases, weekly rate of 29.7 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,038 cases. There are 30 known active cases.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 3,164 cases, weekly rate of 18.7 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 3,168 cases. There are 29 known active cases.
