Ontario reports 1,273 new COVID cases Friday

Today's update also includes 2,362 recoveries, 68 new hospitalizations, and 14 deaths

Public Health Ontario has reported 1,273 new COVID cases in its latest report (May 28).

Today's update also includes 2,362 new recoveries and 14 deaths. 

The deaths include three people between 40 and 59 years old, six people between 60 and 79 years old, and five people over the age of 79. 

Since yesterday, the province has reported 68 new hospitalizations and 16 new admissions of COVID-19 patients to intensive care units.

The May 28 update provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data:

  • 1,023 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, down from 1,072 yesterday.
  • There are 645 patients in intensive care units because of COVID-19 (down from 650 yesterday) and 458 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 452 reported yesterday).
  • The province reported 40,866 tests were processed yesterday.
  • Another 16,002 tests are still under investigation and/or being processed. To date, 15.1 million tests have been completed.
  • Of the new cases reported today, 269 are from Toronto, 268 cases are from Peel, 56 are from York Region, and 28 are from Simcoe-Muskoka.
  • Today's cases include 249 individuals aged 19 and under, 544 people between 20 and 39 years old, 325 people between 40 and 59 years old, 128 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 26 people aged 80 and over.

Vaccines

  • There were 159,775 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on May 27 which is up from 143,748 administered on May 26.
  • As of 6 p.m. on May 27, the province reported 8,690,473 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
  • In total, 624,920 people have been fully vaccinated.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 528,453 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 504,304 recoveries and 8,711 deaths, of which 3,951 were individuals living in long-term care facilities.

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 3,555.2 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario.

Ontario's average weekly incidence rate is 77.8 cases per 100,000 people, which is down by 22 per cent from last week (May 12 to May 18). 

Northern Ontario

A Northern Ontario health unit continues to have the highest weekly case rate in Ontario. 

The weekly case rate (from May 18 to May 24) for the Porcupine Health Unit, which covers the Timmins area, is 333.2 cases per 100,000 population. Peel Region’s rate is 157.9 cases per 100,000 population for the same time period. Toronto Public Health’s rate is 96.2 cases per 100,000 people.

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 394 cases, weekly rate of  17.5 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 392 cases. There are 21 known active cases. 
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 443 cases, weekly rate of 17 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 445 cases. There are 29 known active cases. 
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 1,233 cases, weekly rate of 333.2 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 1,225 cases. There are 280 known active cases.
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 2,064 cases, weekly rate of 9 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 2,082 cases. There are 32 known active cases. 
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 205 cases, weekly rate of 15.3 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 203 cases, There are three known active cases. 
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 1,062 cases, weekly rate of 20.5 cases per 100,000 people. There are 18 known active cases.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 3,203 cases, weekly rate of 12 cases per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 3,190 cases. There are 19 known active cases.
