Ontario confirms 114 new COVID cases today

The province also confirmed a new COVID-related death

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 114 new cases of COVID-19 today, and one new death. 

A person over the age of 80 has died with COVID-19. There are now 1,924 COVID-related deaths of individuals over 80 years old, which is 31.5 per cent of all the cases confirmed in those over 80. 

Ninety of today's 114 new cases were reported by just four of the province's 34 health units. The remaining health units reported between zero and five new cases for today's update. 

Toronto Public Health reported 41 of today's cases, Ottawa reported 21, Peel reported 16, and York Region Public Health reported 12 new cases. 

Public Health Ontario reported a total of 3,100 new COVID-19 cases during the month of August, that's compared to 3,992 during the month of July. In April, during the peak of COVID-19 spread in Ontario, there were 13,795 cases confirmed through lab testing. 

So far, the province has confirmed 42,309 cases of COVID-19 since January, with 38,277 cases now reported recovered and 2,811 cases ending in death. 

Currently, there are 1,221 active, lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ontario, and at least 49 people are hospitalized with the coronavirus, including 18 people in intensive care and nine patients on ventilators. 

Since last report, the province has confirmed 25,098 COVID-19 tests have been processed and another 13,542 are awaiting results.

In Northern Ontario there are five known active cases.

The breakdown for the health units is:

• Algoma Public Health - 28 cases, rate of 23.6 per 100,000 population. There is one known active case. 

• North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit - 35 cases, rate of 27 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 37 cases. There are no known active cases.

• Porcupine Health Unit - 73, rate of 87.5 per 100,000 population. There are no known active cases.

• Public Health Sudbury and Districts - 94 cases, rate of 47.2 per 100,000 population. There is one known active case.

• Timiskaming Health Unit - 19 cases, rate of 58.1 per 100,000. There are no known active cases.

• Northwestern Health Unit - 46 cases, rate of 52.5 per 100,000. The health unit has reported 47 cases. There are two known active cases.

• Thunder Bay District Health Unit - 103 cases, rate of 68.7 per 100,000.There is one known active case.

The Ontario rate of infection per 100,000 population is 282.1.
