Ontario Government Restoring Public Confidence in Hospital Management

Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care

Today, Deb Matthews, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, notified Anson General Hospital (AGH) of her intent to recommend that a supervisor be appointed for the hospital.

Recent concerns about the quality of the hospital's governance and management have raised serious doubts about the ability of the AGH Board to properly govern the hospital's affairs.

The minister's actions were made in response to recommendations made by Mr. Ron Gagnon, appointed as investigator in May of this year by the government to review the AGH's governance and management practices.

These measures will help ensure that efficient and effective operations are restored at the AGH and the community can once again have confidence in the local hospital system.

While concerns about the governance of the hospital are serious, the North East Local Health Integration Network affirms that the proper delivery of health care services at the hospital have not been impacted by these issues.

Quick Facts

  • This is the 20th supervisor to be appointed in Ontario, since 1981.
  • A supervisor is appointed under the Public Hospitals Act, and has the authority to exercise all the powers of the hospital board.

Deb Matthews

"I believe appointing a supervisor is in the best interests of the community and will ultimately strengthen the hospital’s governance, management and accountability. What’s important is that we have the same goal, to help improve health care in Iroquois Falls.”
