WINTER WEATHER DRIVING IN PARRY SOUND

(WEST PARRY SOUND, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) urges drivers to take extra precautions and to avoid risky behaviour when travelling in the winter weather. In inclement weather, avoid travelling if possible.

On January 7, 2014 members of the West Parry Sound OPP responded to 24 motor vehicle collisions.

High winds and heavy snow fall were contributing factors to many of these collisions.  The OPP were forced to close many Provincial Highways as a result of these dangerous driving conditions.

If travel is necessary during potentially dangerous winter weather, it is best to inform someone of the travel route, the destination and the expected arrival time. Prepare yourself for the trip by wearing winter clothing and carry a cell phone. Top up the gas tank and windshield washer fluid. Prepare your car by equipping it with proper winter tires and ensure that headlights, tail lights, wipers and defrost are working properly. Remove all ice and snow from windows.

For a comprehensive list for your winter driving kit or tips on driving safety please refer to http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/safety/winterdrive/winter-safe driving-en-2013.pdf

Before heading out, check road conditions by dialing 5-1-1 or by checking the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) web site atwww.mto.gov.on.ca/english/traveller/conditions .

Remember that winter weather conditions can change quickly which can place extra demands on your vehicle and your driving skills. The winter months are a particularly important time to stay focused on the road and on other vehicles.
