The Plant Engineering and Maintenance Association of Canada (PEMAC) is holding its annual awards dinner in association with the MainTrain conference this week to honour contributions to the association and the profession. Randall Wood and Nicholas Cavallin of Glencore, Kidd Operations have been nominated for the national PEMAC Maintenance Management Professional (MMP) Capstone Award in the Business category.
Randall and Nicholas graduated from Northern College’s MMP program in December 2016 and subsequently received their professional designations. Having successfully completed all seven educational MMP Modules over the last two years, they qualified to submit their Capstone project to certify them as Professional Managers in all aspects of managing and maintaining assets and processes.
The designation is the only one of its kind globally and is highly acclaimed for its value in achieving operational excellence in any industry or business.
The focus of the MMP program is on developing managerial strategies that will contribute to establishing capable, reliable, repeatable, sustainable and safe operational equipment and processes. The educational value of MMP is equally applicable in every national industry and business sector.
Designated MMP graduates are applying their acquired knowledge and strategies in hospitals, educational facilities, mining, manufacturing and forestry. A significant focus is on reliability and financial justifications for improving the effectiveness of capital and operational assets of Canadian companies and businesses.
Northern College is honoured that Randall and Nicholas chose to complete this challenging program here in Timmins and we congratulate them on their outstanding achievements. The competition for this prestigious award comes from many of Canada’s largest corporations in various sectors such as oil and gas, public utilities, manufacturing and public sector businesses. This nomination is yet another indicator of the talent that comes from our local northern communities.
Northern College is pleased to be able to contribute to their ongoing continuing professional development and wishes to thank David Kavanagh and Brian Malloch for their contributions in instructing this valuable program in Timmins. Aligning their own industrial and business managerial successes with the MMP program content is a contributing factor to the successes and achievements of Northern College MMP registrants.
Managerial professionalism through the MMP program is not new to Timmins, Northern College and the Glencore, Kidd Operations facility. According to Brian Malloch, who was the first MMP instructor for Northern College, the Capstone project submitted by Andrew Thorne from the same Kidd facility in 2004, is still recognized today as one of the best Capstone submissions he has ever evaluated.
Andrew Thorne is no longer with Kidd Operations; he is currently VP, Mining and Operational Excellence at Cameco Corporation, one of the world’s largest uranium producers, based in Saskatoon, Sask. We wish Randall and Nicholas similar continued successes.
