New student trustees taking a seat at public school board table

'They worked hard to organize this election virtually to ensure representation for the upcoming school year," says board chair

Three students have been elected to join the District School Board Ontario North East (DSB1) trustee table.

The two student trustees and one Indigenous student trust were approved at the Tuesday, May 4 DSB1 trustee meeting.

The three students are Timmins High and Vocational School's MacKenzie Innes, who is the Indigenous trustee and will sit for one year, Iroquois Falls Secondary School's Josie Michaud will serve a two-term, and Lily Graydon from Timiskaming District Secondary School will be at the table for one year.

“We are so proud of the leadership demonstrated by the 2020-2021 Student Senate and student trustees. They worked hard to organize this election virtually to ensure representation for the upcoming school year. The board of trustees looks forward to working with the newly elected student trustees starting in September,”  said Bob Brush, board chair, in a news release.

There is one two-year term for student trustees so that one student could play a transitional role, according to the school board.

"This will provide consistency in our practices and support the new student trustees in the following school year. The selection process also ensured representation from different regions and for our students who identify as Indigenous," reads the news release.

The outgoing student trustees are Jamal Gagnon (Indigenous trustee), Rowan Glover and Ethan Hurtubise
