New lawsuit more proof that Liberals have no real plan for mining: NDP

QUEEN’S PARK – A lawsuit launched by Northern Superior Resources ( NSR ) against the Ontario Government is more proof that the Liberal Government has no real strategy to create good sustainable jobs.

QUEEN’S PARK – A lawsuit launched by Northern Superior Resources ( NSR ) against the Ontario Government is more proof that the Liberal Government has no real strategy to create good sustainable jobs.

“The Liberals are very good at promising resource jobs but the only people getting work are government lawyers fighting lawsuits,” said NDP Northern Development and Mines Critic Michael Mantha. “The government's lack of any framework for mining in this province is driving away future investors and threatening jobs. This government is good at talk and bad at action, and this lawsuit from NSR is just the latest fallout.”

Northern Superior Resources is a Sudbury-based company with operations in Ontario and Quebec. They are the fourth mining company to bring legal action against the Liberal government in recent years. The company came to Ontario to explore mining opportunities, but has been stalled by unclear consultation guidelines and lack of willingness on the part of the government to deal with the parties involved.

Yesterday in the Legislature, Mantha warned Premier Wynne that ongoing mismanagement of mining in Ontario would have serious economic impacts.

“The Liberal government claims they're ready to develop good, sustainable value-added mining jobs, but the reality is that they’ve been sitting on the sidelines for years,” said Mantha. “They failed to establish even the simplest of mining development plans that involve communities, First Nations, and companies alike.”

Mantha and the NDP say the failure to get consultations underway demonstrates the misguided priorities of the Liberal government, and is paving the path for future disputes.

“If the government continues to mismanage this file we will see the lawsuits pile up while companies flee and much needed jobs are lost,” said Mantha.
