There's a new food bank setting up in town, but this one is for your four-legged friends.

The Timmins and District Humane Society and Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals are partnering for a Pet Food Pantry.

It's a program humane society manager Alicia Santamaria said they've been wanting to do for a while.

“Once a month we’re going to be opening up a space in the foyer at the library and handing out pet food to people that are needing this food for their cats and dogs," she explained.

It will be for people facing financial hardships and give them access to pet food and supplies at no cost.

To make it a success, Santamaria encourages everyone to donate a bag of dog or cat food "so that we can start and hopefully continue helping people in the community that are requiring some assistance in getting food for their pet."

Donations can be adult dog and puppy food (cans and kibble), adult cat and kitten food (cans and kibble), cat litter, and new or cleaned, gently used supplies such as litter pans and scoops, bowls, collars and leashes.

If you have food that is already open, Santamaria said it has to be properly labelled in the original bag that shows an expiry date.

The first pick up date is Nov. 20 at the Timmins Public Library, 320 2nd Ave., from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

People picking up food will have to fill out a short form.

“We’ll be there and available to help people with what food they need for their pet,” said Santamaria.

Donations can be dropped off at 620 Mahoney Rd., Timmins. If resources allow, pick up is a possibility. For more information, call the TDHS at 705-264-1816.
